Buyers Beware: Damaged Cars and Equipment After Accra Floods

Everyone loses whenever a flood disaster happens. The massive damages caused by the recent Accra flood do not end when the water dries. Some vehicles, generators, electronics, machines, spare parts, and other equipment that were submerged or affected by floodwater may quietly find their way onto the market. To an unsuspecting buyer, such items may look clean, polished, and fairly priced-but beneath the surface, they may carry serious hidden damages.

Flooded cars are especially dangerous. Water can enter the engine, gearbox, electrical system, sensors, wiring, carpets, seats, and control units. A car may start and move normally today, only to develop expensive faults weeks later. The same risk applies to equipment such as generators, fridges, compressors, machines, and electronic devices. Once water touches sensitive components, corrosion begins slowly, and the buyer may end up paying heavily for someone else’s loss.

Customers must therefore be careful after floods. Do not rush to buy a car or equipment simply because the price looks attractive. Ask where the item was stored during the flood. Inspect for mud stains, damp smell, rust, watermarks, unusual electrical faults, new upholstery, or freshly cleaned interiors. For vehicles, insist on a trusted mechanic, electrical diagnosis, engine inspection, and proper document verification before paying. For high-value items, use escrow or a trusted transaction coordinator.

Unfortunately, Ghana does not yet have a strong public system that actively identifies and flags flooded vehicles or equipment after disasters. Public institutions are often limited by weak data systems, fragmented reporting, lack of real-time market monitoring, insufficient inspection capacity, and poor coordination between flood response agencies, insurers, regulators, sellers, and buyers. As a result, damaged goods can move from flooded areas into open markets without clear disclosure.
